From the rear cover:

"The first comprehensive publication of the work of Jamie Wyeth, an artist whose work over the past fifteen years has received increasing recognition and acclaim.

The quality of Wyeth's work trancends any label. It is derived from an outlook that can be both penetrating and playful and from a complete control of the medium. This volume contains his well-known portraits of such people as John F. Kennedy, Lincoln Kirstein and Andrew Wyeth, along with some newer ones, notably of Andy warhol and Rudolf Nureyev.

Jamie Wyeth's work has an astonishing power and variety. Through his imagination and skill, he is able to elicit specific personalities even from his nonhuman sujects, be they animals or the woods and fields of Pennsylvania or the rocky coast of Maine.

This collection attracts the viewer immediately, but it sets up reverberations that linger on to haunt the mind long afterward."

Works are categorized into six themes:

Sitters: In this chapter, it states, "Jamie does not paint a portrait as much as he lives it", and notes how he spends months studying a subject before a painting emerges onto canvas.

Shapes: "...the buckets and kettles, pumpkins and bags,bunker-shaped cisterns and pipe lengths seem to exist for the pure joy of their shapes."

Pigs and Things

The Deep Gorge: "What appeals to the naturalist in Jamie is not the far-off, idealized landscapes of sun-splashed meadows but the views from deeper in the woods and closer up."

Monhegan Island: Island houses set amongst the rugged, sea-swept landscapes of Monhegan Island, Maine.
