Ludwig Hohlwein was born as the son of a locksmith in the year 1874 in Wiesbaden, Germany. Already during his study of architecture his main talent in painting and drawing became obvious. His first design for a poster dates back to 1906, and in 1910 he was already so famous that he was engaged to design the poster for the Brussels World Fair. His most artistically important phase was before WWII in the years 1912-1925. A large variety of stunning posters dates to this period, and Hohlwein developed his own unmistaken style with clear shapes, bright colors and a good portion of humor. By 1925, Ludwig Hohlwein had already designed 3000 different advertisements, and he became the best-known German commercial artist of his time. People even referred to "the Hohlwein Style" when they saw posters imitating his work. In the 1930s, his style changed as he adapted his art to the common taste the Nazi movement required.
