Tucholsky, Kurt, Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles, John Heartfield, Amherst, Univ. of Mass. Press, 1972, first edition, 4to (10.25" x 8.25"), HB in dj, red cloth bds w/ gilt titles in yellow, white, red & black illus dj w/ decorative titles, VG / VG-. Extremities bumped. DJ edgeworn, rubbed, spine faded.

245 pp, profuse illus in b/w. Translated by Anne Halley, afterword and notes by Harry Zohn. Originally published in 1929 in German.

"Perceptive and ironic, by turns savage, scornful or just plain funny, Tucholsky dissected the silly as well as the more sinister aspects of his time. The chief targets of his satire (and indignation) were the fatuousness of the German bourgeoisie and its institutions, the arrogance of power, the madness of nationalism and militarism; the chief objects of his compassion and sympathy were the poor and the exploited. These themes come together most powerfully in Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles, a 'picture book' he produced in 1929 in collaboration with John Heartfield, the great pioneer of photo-montage. The book's impression upon its first readers was immediate and great; since then it has been a valued and difficult-to-come-by collector's item."    [Book ID # 1387]
