Bauhaus typography still exerts its unmistakeable influence and inspires nearly a century later. This classic work, rightly included in "Bibliographic: 100 Classic Graphic Design Books" presents an extensive study of the experimental graphic design and typographic output of students and staff at the Bauhaus. Introductory essays by Herbert Bayer, Josef Albers, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and essays by several others (German text). Illustrated throughout with approximately 500 b/w and color images of Bauhaus printed matter from 1919 Weimar to 1932 Berlin. A treasure trove of examples of posters, books ( inc. textbooks for the Bauhaus students), magazines, postcards, letterhead, catalogs and more are included in this thorough survey, many rarely before published. Specimens emphasize the characteristics of Bauhaus typography which strived for functional clarity of communication by the use sans serif typefaces known as grotesque, often using only upper or lower case in a composition, rather than the two combined; geometrical arrangements even on the diagonal; printed rules; contrasting sizes and colors of letterforms; the integration of photographs into compositions (or "typefoto", so named by Moholy-Nagy who believed that combining word + image enhanced their impact and effectiveness). Essays by, and examination of several central Bauhaus figures and important individual typography designers are accompanied by brief biographies including: Josef Albers, Alfred Arndt, Willy Baumeister, Herbert Bayer, Max Bill, Erich Comeriner, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Xanti Schawinsky, Oskar Schlemmer, Joost Schmidt, Studio Z.

A nice copy of this uncommonly found first edition, by many of the Bauhaus masters and their students.
