A definitive survey, lavishly illustrated, that examines the evolution of modern book design and illustration in Europe - concentrating on Britain from William Morris to the modernist approach developed and nurtured at the Bauhaus - and the United States, tracing developments from the late 19th century through the 1960s of the the 20th century.

The author was a tutor in typography for many years at the Royal College of Art, and a recognized expert in the field of the graphic arts. This title is one of several of his books on the history of typography, book design, and illustration.
