Krichevski, Vladimir, The Book Cover: The Graphic Face of the Revolutionary Onslaught Epoch 1917-1937, Moscow, Samolot, 2002, first edition, 4to (10.5" x 7"), SB, silver-gray paper wraps, F / none (as issued).

270 pp. Limited edition of 2000 copies, now out of print. Over 500 illustrations, the majority in color. Text in Russian. Great reference, especially for those interested in early Russian Avantgarde. This book is in wonderful condition.

From flap: This book by a Moscow designer, art historian and collector is the result of his twenty-year long research on Russian graphic design of the 20’s and 30’s in the past century. Although this restless period of Russian culture is better known in other parts of the world than other periods, it still deserves more attention. The graphic face of the epoch needs restructuring, and the author of the book undertakes the role of the “graphic archeologist.” The phenomenon of the “revolutionary onslaught” has been illustrated with the samples of book and magazine covers that most fully manifest it. Apart from brief excurses into traditionalism, the book embraces the entire spectrum of modernism that was inspired and to a certain degree encouraged by the socialist revolution.

Individual chapters tackle such phenomena as cubofuturism, constructivism, eccentrism, sensational style, “Ost-style,” and Russian art deco. “The Book Cover” is an experimental investigation of design styles in which the study of book covers is indispensable. The author focuses on lettering and typography, decoration and composition, texture and colouring. In addition, he considers current graphic motifs, graphic clichés, paradoxes, and other elements depicting the peculiar spirit of the epoch. The theme is developed chronologically according to the logic of stylistic developments. The vivid and detailed presentation of the materials abounds in facts, commentary, hypotheses, ironic remarks and lyrical digression.

This is a Russian book on the Russian graphic phenomenon with a fresh and discerning approach of a designer to exquisite, naïve, and bizarre things. The text is comprised of nine chapters on different styles, eighteen short essays on various aspects of the theme, an index of the books and names, and brief comments on each illustration. More than 500 works belonging to more than 200 known and 100 unknown designers have been reproduced in the book. The majority of the works have never been published before, and many names have been undeservedly forgotten. The unprecedented volume of diverse and vast material has been originally presented in the author’s personal typographic manner.    [Book ID # 594]
