40 Dessins de Picasso en Marge du Buffon, Paris, Editions Jonquieres, 1957, first edition, sm elephant folio (15.25" x 11.5") HB in slipcase, w/ black cover titles on gray pastedown; textured, photographically reproduced "burlap" paper over boards, black spine titles on gray pastedown label; plates in "french-fold" folio wrapper, laid into the boards, VG / in G+ publishers' slipcase (no dj as issued). Spine darkened, extremities worn, some exposure. 4.5" loss to spine label, contents near fine. Professional archival repair to slipcase: missing spine label panel and bottom panel replaced.

40 b/w verso numbered loose lithographic plates after drawings by Picasso, a double sheet with a facsimile of his dedication and portrait sketch of Dora Maar on opposites, a double sheet with a Picasso signature in reproduction and plate list inside, a final [unnumbered] double sheet of his written "explicit" [explanation] - "All drawings in this book were made Sunday, January 24, 1943, during the afternoon, in Paris, 6 rue de Savoie.", colophon. These were originally drawn by Picasso for an edition of Buffon's Histoire Naturelle and published by Martin Fabriani, who authorized this edition. This copy is N° 772 of a numbered, limited edition of 2000 printed on vélin du Marais (of a total edition of 2226, the first 226 having been printed on vélin d'Arches and carried an original signed engraving by Picasso.)
