Halsman, Philippe (text); Paul Julian (illustations), Piccoli: a fairy tale, New York, Simon & Schuster, 1953, first edition, stated first printing, 6.25" x 9.25", 8vo, Hardcover, unclipped illustrated DJ, pictorial paper over boards printed in brick red with multi-color decorative titles inside a yellow faux label. EPS repeat the cityscape line drawing of the pictorial boards, GOOD / GOOD..

93 pp.31 illustrations. Jacket has loss at extremities, creasing, light surface soiling, flaps age-toned (Please see accompanying image to best see this. It is very large; click once and then again to allow ideal view and scrolling.) Book has wear along edges, exposed corners, loss at spine head and foot. Previous owner's signature to FFEP, and again, PO's name & address to first fly leaf. Interior pages have evidence of having been well-read (very light finger soiling and vague rumpling to paper at page bottoms), but no tears and binding is strong and tight.

From the rear jacket: "HERE, unmistakably, is the kind of magic all of us remember from our childhood." Piccoli is the story of Piccoli Sogni ("Little Dreams"), a tiny girl who lives in a matchbox. A stranger gives her as a gift to a sad young boy and so begins the magic.

Phillippe Halsman, a celebrated photographer, wrote this tale for his daughters. He is best known for his popular 1959 book, Philippe Halsman's Jump Book, a collection of 200+ famous folk captured in the act of jumping. He worked with Salvador Dali on the 1954 book Dali's Moustache. Halsman was a member of the distinguished Magnum Photos group and in 1958 he was chosen as one of the world's 10 greatest photographers in an International poll. The stunning, surrealistic illustrations were created by Paul Julian, highly regarded by animation enthusiasts as one of the principal background artists for many of the most famous Warner Bros cartoons. He also gained some fame for his design and color work for the United Productions of America's 1954 production of The Tell-Tale Heart, based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story, now considered by many a cartoon masterpiece and the first to ever be X-rated.

A very rare title, with an interesting mid-20th century backstory, that appeals to children and adults alike. (As a kid this book only reinforced my desire - first begun by many readings of Rumer Godden's Impunity Jane - for a miniature friend that I could keep in one of my pockets.)    [Book ID # 2054]
