Mourlot, Fernand, Les Affiches Originales des Maitres de l'Ecole de Paris: Braque Chagall Dufy Leger Matisse Miro Picasso, [Paris], Andre Sauret, 1959, first French edition, folio, 9.75 x 12.75", hardcover, yellow cloth boards with titles stamped in royal blue, minor wear from shelving. Interior, recto only lithographed plates pristine, Near Fine/ Near Fine. Original "Rhodoid" cover has minor loss at lower right front corner and lower front spine foot that exposes the lithographed dust jacket (See detail in our image - click once and then expand again to best view).

247 pp. printed 102 recto only, color lithographs by Mourlot, reproducing gallery posters designed by Braque, Chagall, Dufy, Leger, Matisse, Miro and Picasso. Brief essay by Mourlot, text in French. At the back is “Catalog Descriptif” arranged by artist and includes the number of originals produced, dates, etc.

These magnificently printed lithographs were printed by the firm, Mourlot Frères. Fernand Mourlot, a third-generation Parisian printer, expanded into lithography in the 1920s, and worked directly with some of the most prominent artists of the day, including those represented here. His text for this volume was hand set at the Imprimerie Nationale, and the dust jacket cover design was created by Matisse to honor the hundred-year anniversary of this, by-then, prestigious printing house. The stunning array of art works includes the seminal (such as Matisse's "Jazz" poster), but also many lesser-known posters produced purely as advertising. The original posters presented range from 1933 to 1959; 13 by Georges Braque (1946 to 1959), 15 by Marc Chagall (between 1933 and 1959), 4 by Raoul Dufy (between 1939 and 1956), 7 by Fernand Léger (between 1945 and 1953), 10 by Henri Matisse (between 1945 and 1953), 9 by Joan Miro (between 1947 and 1959) and 44 by Pablo Picasso (between 1948 and 1959). At the back is "Catalog Descriptif" arranged by artist and includes the number of originals produced, dates, etc.

This exceptionall and historic production is increasingly difficult to find as it is frequently "broken" to sell the poster plates individually. One of the most beautiful books on lithography ever printed, and a true labor of love.
