"Artists, illustrators, and collectors will welcome the first reissue in a century and a half of these copperplates, engraved to illustrate the first work of its kind, as much as will historians of art, of invention, and of economic life. As Diderot's 'Encyclopédie' was the crowning venture of the French Age of Enlightenment, so the plates which accompanied it were among the finest achievements of the 18th-century graphic arts." Denis Diderot(1713-1784), an influential figure of the Enlightenment, affords us a detailed look at bourgeois life in 18th-C France which remains an invaluable reference today.
