McAndrew, John (editor), Guide to Modern Architecture: Northeast States, New York, Museum of Modern Art, 1940, first edition, 5.75" x 8" (8vo), softcover, blue paper wraps w/ white titles & red illustration; with white plastic spiral binding. Profuse b/w illustration, including plans, photos & drawings, Very Good -/ none as issued. Wraps have some creasing, edgewear, rubbing and "finger-soiling". Interior clean and unmarked..

126 pp. The author, a practicing architect, historian and educator became the curator for the Department of Architecture and Industrial Art at the Museum of Modern Art in 1937 where he mounted an exhibition on Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, designed the sculpture garden for the museum and created the very popular traveling exhibition "What is Modern Architecture?" and its accompanying multiple-edition pamphlet. As a fairly early proponent of regionalism and modern American architecture he undertook to produce for MoMA, a series of guides on the subject by regions. McAndrew intended this to be the first but regrettably it was the only in the series to be completed. Contents address, as per the introduction, functionalism, Frank Lloyd Wright, vernacular architecture, industrial architecture, skyscrapers and commercial buildings, mass production & standardization. Structures include Gropius' and Breuer's homes in Mass., the World's Fair buildings, MoMA, Rockefeller Center, among many others.
