Sarg, Tony, Tony Sarg's New York, New York, Greenberg, 1926, first edition, folio (13" x 10.25"), Hardcover, blue/black cloth boards w/ color illus cover pastedown & gilt embossed embellishment of Sarg's signature., G+ / none. See details below, SIGNED by Sarg with original drawing to first flyleaf.

Boards have wear esp. at extremities, spine cloth chipped at spine head/foot, corners exposed, a few scuffs front & rear, front board has 2" area of discoloration. Front hinge starting at top & bottom - still firm. First front-free endpaper, very brittle and we have applied archival repair tape just at the gutter. The second (with drawing) has some discoloration and soil to bottom 1/3 of the page and a diagonal fold/tear at lower corner where we have again applied archival repair tape to the back of it. Occasional age-stains, finger soiling & creasing to page borders throughout not effecting images. Several pages have tears at top inner left near gutter, also reinforced with archival repair tape. Upper right corner of"Aquarium" page missing 5/8" x 2.5" piece. same piece was chipped from image page, but put back in place with archival tape (again does not effect the image itself). Lower corner missing from "Shuttle" page, previous page repaired & stained w/ tape residue on verso.

Unpaginated, 24 full-page color illustrations. Elevated, bird's-eye-views of NYC sites, thus situated as to show the myriad activities at once in a single moment. Sarg's affection for the city is clearly evident--"...always people, a never-ending procession of people of all kinds, from every walk of life--people who are the actors in an infinity of small comedies. It is so that I see New York and so that I wish to picture it--a city depicted in terms of people."

Original illustration of a rotund policeman in profile, rendered in pencil, accompanies Sarg's signature and date as "27" to first flyleaf. (See our pic which is unusually large. Click image twice to allow scrolling for best detailed view.)

Contents: Grand Central Station, Public Library, Museum of Natural History, The Aquarium, Sixth Avenue "L" at Thirty-third Street, Peacock Alley in the Waldorf Astoria, Times Square, Twenty-third Ferry Slip, Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Ghetto (refers to a Lower East Side tenement), The Flatiron Building, The Stock Exchange, Washington Market, Greenwich Village, The City Hall, The Shuttle in the Subway, Manhattan Bridge, Customs Inspection at Steamship Pier, Chinatown, The Great White Way, Columbus Circle, Jefferson Market Police Court, "East Side, West Side, All Around the Town", "Snatched from the Melting Pot".

A nice copy, (despite noted flaws which are worse than they sound), of an increasingly scarce New York City title with a rare, large pencil drawing signed and dated by the author/illustrator. (Our image is very large. Click once and then again to allow best view and scrolling.)    [Book ID # 2086]
