From the introduction:

"Irving Penn is a photographer who is one of the great new artists of light. He was one of the first to challenge the acceptance of documentary news photography as an art. In the best of his photographs he has succeeded in imposing his ideal on matter-of-fact reality, an ideal of beauty that has made a whole generation of artists and photographers pause, admire and imitate his work. For above all a Penn photograph is a beautiful image. It increases out store of admiration for life’s richness and beauty by increasing our awareness of life. Things seen by a new pure eye, in new juxtapositions and contexts, act as revelations."    [Book ID # 1777]
