Renger-Patzsch, Albert, Joy Before the Object, New York , NY, Aperture, 1993, first edition, thus, 4to (11.5" x 9.75"), HB, black cloth boards in black photographic dj, F / NF.

80 pp. 60+ duotone plates. Preface by Weston Naef, critical essay by Donald Kuspit. A collection of the influential B&W photographs by German photographer Renger-Patzsch. Plant studies, animals, landscapes, industrial buildings and architectural motifs., interspersed with quotes from him about his work. From the publisher of this, the re-issue of the photographer's classic 1928 book "Die Welt ist Schön" ("The World is Beautiful") : "Amidst the climate of intellectual, artistic, and political ferment in 1920's Germany, the idea of beauty was being redefined. A new aesthetic burst forth, expressed through the glass and steel of the Bauhaus, in the graphics used by the new advertising agencies, on artists' easels and in the theatre. Chief among these innovators whose work would alter the way we perceive reality was Albert Renger-Patzsch. Renger-Patzsch was born in 1897 in Wurzburg, Germany, and began taking photographs at the age of 12. Identified with the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) Movement, Albert Renger-Patzsch used photography to find unexpected resonance in the everyday objects of the world around him." His striking photographs embody its principles in their sober, unsentimental vision. He explains his concept of photography in the 1927 "Das Deutsche Lichtbild" : "The secret of a good photograph, which can possess artistic qualities just as a work of visual art can, resides in its realism. For rendering our impressions of nature, of plants, animals, the works of architects and sculptors, and the creations of engineers, photography offers us a most reliable tool. We still don't sufficiently appreciate the opportunities to capture the magic of material things the artists, and let us try to use the medium of photography to create photographs that can endure because of their photographic qualities - without borrowing from art." Roosens and Salu 9229.

Please see another of our titles, the first edition of by Renger-Patzsch's "Die Welt Ist Schön", noted in Andrew Roth's The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century.
