Atget, Eugene, Atget: Photographe de Paris, New York, E. Weyhe, 1930, First edition, 4to (10.75" x 8.25"), HB, VG-/ none as issued. Shape of front board is slightly warped , narrow band of waterstaining along edge of frontispiece, 2 closed tears to caption booklet.

Frontispiece photograph of Atget by Berenice Abbott. Preface by Pierre Mac-Orlan (23 pp., large print, text in French). 96 richly printed sepia-toned collotype plates, rectos only, of Eugene Atget's keenly observed and detailed photographic documentation of the changing streets of his beloved Paris -- as it moved into the twentieth century, slipping away from what he had known so well in nineteenth century of his youth; a 5-page fold-out caption list, attached to the rear pastedown, makes it possible to identify the photographic plates without flipping back and forth.

Bernice Abbott was a great admirer of the little known photographer whom she met during her eight year stay in the modernist vortex of Paris in the 20's. She worked there as an assistant to Man Ray, and as a portrait photographer. She managed to purchase a great number of his photographs before his death and subsequently, after his death in 1927, acquired thousands of his glass plate negatives and prints, and the entire contents of his studio. Together with financial help from friend Julian Levy, whom she also had met in Paris and who was equally enthralled by Atget's work, this enormous collection was sent to the United States. Levy, once back in New York began to work on his goal to open an art gallery devoted to showing modern photography, during which he found work at the weyhe Gallery. Abbott meanwhile arranged with a French publisher for the publication of a book on Atget's work. Early in 1930, Levy convinced Edward Weythe to allow him to organize an exhibition of Atget photographs and to underwrite the American edition of Abbott's book to accompany it. Atget's first exhibition in America opened at the Weyhe Gallery in November of 1930. He had not lived to know the enduring influence that his prodigious effort and singular vision would exert on the generations of photographers that followed him.

Listed in Andrew Roth’s The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the 20th Century. Increasingly rare.    [Book ID # 323]
