Blossfeldt, Karl, Wunder in der Natur, Leipzig, H. Schmidt & C. Gunther, 1942, first edition, folio (12.5" x 10.25"), HB, blue/green/yellow paper boards; blue leather spine w/ gilt titles, marbled parchment-colored endpapers, VG+ / none. Corners slightly bumped, spine extremities worn, lower edges of bds somewhat bumped, slight waviness to text block.

120 heliogravure plates, rectos only. Rebound in 1944 in stunning gingko-leaf patterned handmade papers and 6-raised-band lt. blue leather spine. The third of three important books of Blossfeldt's remarkable photographs, listed in Roth's The Book of 101 Books. "All three books present Blossfeldt's straightforwardly scientific, if greatly magnified, close-ups of plant forms as isolated objects of unexpected aesteheic delight" (Aletti in Roth). Lovely copy.

Each image is a work of art. Blossfeldt was a professor of applied art. He began creating these images in 1898 for use as visual aides in his lectures on natural structures. He gathered plant specimens himself, by hand, on bicycle trips to the countryside. Karl Nierendorf, the Berlin gallery owner who first recognized the artistic importance of these images, displayed them along side African sculpture, and pronounced that Blossfeldt's photographs were symbols of "a new unity in all spheres of life, art, and technology."    [Book ID # 902]
