Wulffen, E., E. Stenger, O. Goldmann, P. Englisch, R. Brettschneider, G. Bingen & H. Ludwig, Die Erotik in der Photographie, Germany, Verlag Fur Kulturforschung, 1931, first edition, thick 8vo (7" x 9.5"), HB, mustard cloth boards w/ embossed cover & spine titles in red, VG- / none. Edges worn, boards darkened, spot to ffep, text block slightly wavy, several signatures tender.

253 pp, richly illustrated (200+ images), b/w and many "colorized" images of nudes tipped onto black stock. Subtitled "die Geschichtliche entwicklung der Aktphotographie und de erotischen lichtbildes und seine beziehungen zur psychopathia sexualis," or "The historical development of erotic photography and the role of the erotic photograph in relation to the Psychopathia Sexualis." In German the word "erotik", as used in the main title, implies "sexy" rather than "sexually explicit". The beautiful gravure printed plates throughout this well-designed production, so characteristic of book design in Germany during the 1930s, are both credited and anonymous photos - primarily German, Austrian and French. Included photographers are: Herrlich, Manassť, Mandel, Meyer-Kupfer, Sahm, Shuppich, Rebay, Willinger, among others.

Articles include:

Erich Stenger: The technical development of photography; Gustav Bingen: The organization of the secret photo trade; Petrol Goldmann: The act picture and the censorship; Erich Wulffen: The official pursuit of the secret photo trade (this work was seized); Paul Englisch: The erotic photograph as eyecatcher; and Heinrich Ludwig: Eroticism in film. Text is in German.

A rare title, one of the earliest on the subject.
