Kate, Rolf ten, Pi Scheffer, Paul Breman, W. A. Eschauezier, Harm Moback, Michiel A. de Ruyteret, 6 Over Jazz, Zaandijk, Netherlands, Uitgeverij J. Heijnis Tsz., 1958, first edition, square 8vo, 8.25 x 8.25", HB, pictorial cloth (from van der Elsken photo of Louis Armstrong) black-printed over tan cloth boards w/ pictorial endpapers, VG+ / no dj. Small prev owner's signature on upper right of title page.

110 pp, profusely illustrated throughout with photographs and drawings. Text in Dutch. Original 1958 edition, complete with oft missing 45 rpm record, 'Twintig Fragmenten Jazzmuziek', in a pocket at the back (NF), featuring 20 recorded excerpts from songs by artists showcased in the book. Blind Willy Nelson, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck Quartet, Miles Davis.

Notable as a great title on jazz, and for its unusual design, using a mix of terrific images (photographs, caricatures, lithos, and woodcuts) printed on varying colored paper stocks to mark the beginning of each section. Included are several full-page photos of jazz artists, some by the noted Dutch photographer and avid jazz fan, Ed van der Elsken (best known for his rare 1959 classic: "JAZZ", now considered one of the most important photography books of the mid-twentieth century) and others by Gerrit Schilp and Carel de Vogel; rendered images by Hans Buter, Frits Müller, and Berg.

A well designed, uncommon book on jazz, of interest to both the jazz enthusiast and photography collector, particularly scarce in the US.    [Book ID # 1721]
