Weiss, Hillary, The American Bandanna [Bandana]: Culture on Cloth from George Washington to Elvis, San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1990, first edition, square 8vo (9.625" x 10"), Softcover, french flaps, pictorial illustrated cream paper wraps w/ navy titles, FINE (as new) / none., signed and inscribed by the author.

112 pp. Illustrated throughout in full color photos, many full-page. Features bandannas commemorating historical and cultural events as early as the 18th century, and so many more in a variety of categories. "Americans would persist in printing small squares of fabric with the ideas and images of their lives. As an article of clothing, it had the freedom to function as needed....As a communication medium known early in its history as 'little banner,' the bandanna became an informal and economical means of promoting what might capture the public's attention."

From the jacket flap: "An extraordinary range of images from the fields of sport, politics, entertainment, business, and, of course, the Wild West have found themselves onto bandannas, reflecting over 200 years of American life. The American bandanna explores the beauty and versatility of this remarkable article of clothing from the first American bandanna -- designed by Martha Washington -- to those featuring Sitting Bull, Franklin Roosevelt, Little Orphan Annie, Duke Ellington, scenes from "Gone With The Wind", and the 1939 World's Fair. Here, too, are bandannas sporting such luminaries from the Fifties and Sixties as Elvis and the Beatles.

A veritable history on cloth, bandannas record the heroes and symbols of the times and conjure up a sense of adventure and purpose for all who wear them. So step back in time or take a look at the present in a delightful new way. Beautifully illustrated with more than 100 full-color photographs, the American bandanna is for anyone interested in design, history, collectibles, or Americana."

A well designed and authoritative volume, full of visual surprises - in perfect condition.
