Stewart-Wilson, Mary, Queen Mary's Dolls' House, London, Ebury Press, 1995, oblong 8vo (8.75" x 10.5"), HB, wine red cloth boards w/ gilt spine titles in photographic dj, NF / NF.

192 pp. Foreword by Prince Michael Kent. Abundant color photographs by David Cripps, also some b&w floorplans. Includes chapter on the building of the house. A room-by-room visual journey through the lilliputian mansion built for Queen Mary(grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II) by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1924 on a 12/1 scale. The furniture and contents were made in miniature by the leading craftmen and manufacturers of the day. Many were gifted by all the early 20th century crown heads of the world! Though it is difficult to chose a favorite room, possibly the most remarkable is the Library. It is the repository of seven hundred drawings inside the cabinets, and on the shelves are two hundred miniature books bound in find leather, their titles embossed in gold -- each specially commissioned or contributed by leading authors: Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham, Arthur Conan Doyle, G. K. Chesterton, Joseph Conrad, Robert Graves, Aldous Huxley, Hilaire Belloc, Rose Macauley, W. Somerset Maugham, and Vita Sackville-West. The bookplates for each of the books were designed by beloved "Winnie-the-Pooh" illustrator, Ernest Shepard. Rudyard Kipling submitted not only two poems, but illustrated them himself. Topping off the fine works of this distinguished crowd are the leather-bound autograph books--one each for famous folks from the stage and screen, the military, and politicans.

If one has not been lucky enough to view "The Dolls' House" in person at Windsor Castle, or the owner of the two volume, 1924 Benson & Weaver "The Book Of The Queen's Dollhouse Library", this title is a tour of the decorative arts and interiors of the smallest of the great English country homes. David Cripps' beautiful photography so accurately captures each room in this tiny Renaissance style English house, that in most cases it is hard to believe that the views are not actually produced in human scale!
