Chamberlain, B.H., The Silly Jelly-Fish, Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 13, Tokyo, T. Hasegawa, 1887, first edition, 12mo (7.5" x 5.5"), SB, silk stitched color illus crepe wraps, G+ / none. Edges worn, spine foot chipped, dampstain at lower spine, rear wrap creased & slightly torn at binding, lower of the two silk ties is missing.

18 pp. Profuse color wood-block illustrations.

This is one of a series of traditional Japanese fairy tales produced for the English market by Takejiro Hasegawa, an excellent Japanese printer and publisher of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who had ties with Western missionaries which prompted English- and French-language projects. Chamberlain, an expert on Japan, is the translator. The paper is a distinctive heavy crepe; books from Hasegawa, called chirimen-bon, were first hand-printed, then hand-creped. Absolutely lovely.

See also on this site another from the series of 20, The Old Man Who Made the Dead Trees Blossom.    [Book ID # 1746]
