Portland Cement Association, Concrete in Architecture, Chicago, Portland Cement Association, 1927, first edition, 4to (11" x 8"), HB, illustrated blue paper covered boards, illustrated titles in gilt/black/white, blue endpapers., VG- / none as issued. Exterior cover has some soiling along spine edges, paper loss to spine top and bottom of, small rust marks along rear spine (as if once laid upon a metal spiral bound book). Interior is complete and tight.

Privately printed, 60 pp.; 11 full-page color plates, 31 b/w plates. The manufacturer's survey of early 20th Century concrete architecture and its decorative application in interiors, by way of several American examples (likely clients).

From the Foreword: "The beauty inherent in concrete has long lain dormant, hidden from view, awaiting only the genius of the designing mind to reveal it. In the pages which follow, illustrations are presented that show how this beauty has now been revealed by the creation of enduring decorations...."

There are 7 sections, each devoted to a particular building which shows off the beauty of concrete construction and decoration. Especially featured are structures with intricate paintings on concrete decorations. Each section contains a page of info on the construction of the building, followed by several full page photos, some of which are in color.

The Edgewater Beach Hotel, Chicago, (Benjamin H. Marshall - Marshall and Fox Architects). The incredible ceilings of the lounges and Passaggio were inspired by the Davanzati Palace at Florence, Italy. Eight photographs including: East Lounge Room in color; East Lounge Room (a different view in b/w); West Lounge Room; The Passaggio in color; West Lounge Room from the Passaggio; Reception Hall - Studio of Benjamin H. Marshall, Wilmette, Illinois; Entrance to the Studio of Benjamin H. Marshall.
Shrine of the Sacred Heart, Washington, D.C., (Frederick V. Murphy - Murphy and Olmsted, Architects). "In the Shrine of the Sacred Heart there have been wrought in concrete, walls as rich as those produced with the rarest marbles, and decorations, symbolic of a mystic faith, as excellent as those produced in the best mosaics." Seven photographs including exterior views, interior views of arches, columns & stain glass windows, details of columns, etc. Two of the photos are in color.
The University and Women's Athletic Clubs, Los Angeles, (David C. Allison - Allison and Allison, Architects). Eight photographs including: Ceiling detail in color; Entrance; Ceiling of the Silent Room; A decorated Ceiling - Women's Athletic Club, Los Angeles, California; Assembly Room - Woman's Athletic Club; Exterior view of the University Club with vintage cars parked in front; Wilshire Boulevard Congregational Church, Los Angeles.
Mayan-Deco styled Metropolitan Theatre, Los Angeles, (William Lee Woolett Architect). Eleven photographs including: the Mezzanine in color; Mural, "Princess of the Golden Kingdom" in b/w; Mezzanine - another view in b/w; Balcony Entrance - "This portal represents one of the ancient temple fragments which supposedly were still standing when the reinforced concrete frame of a theatre was built around them. The white texture was obtained by the use of white Portland cement, and the concrete urns were covered with gold-leaf; Snail Deer in the Lobby in color; Lion and Reptile Combined; Procrastination - "The Spirit of the Building" - a "fantastic ornament, which was designed by the architect and cast in concrete, has the body of glorified garden slug."; Niche in the Balcony Wall in color; Aisle Portal; Balcony Wall; Bracket on a concrete wall.
