Nicholson, Emrich, Contemporary Shops in the United States, New York, Architectural Book Publishing Co, 1945, first edition, 4to (11" x 8.75"), HB, black cloth boards w/ bold yellow titles, VG / none. Titles lightly faded, top corners bumped, head & tail of spine worn, two water spots on rear board, endpapers browned [from glue aging, common for this volume]. Internally very clean.

192 pp. Foreword by George Nelson. index. Profusely illustrated with b/w photos and plans; stores' exterior & interior designs, each accompanied by a brief paragraph describing some highlights about the store and its location. 88 shops are covered, many by notable 20th century modernist designers: Herbert Bayer, Dorothy Draper, Paul Frankl, Alexander Girard, Victor Gruen, Morris Lapidus, Paul Laszlo, Raymond Loewy, Samuel Marx, Eliot Noyes, Gilbert Rhode, T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Raphael Soriano, Walter Dorwin Teague, Kem Weber and Russel Wright, among several others.

From George Nelson, in his foreword: "It is because of the integrity and richness of the best commercial design that I commend this book."

A thorough survey and valuable reference on mid-century retail spaces, that reflects a wide range of retail design concepts - from the forward and well conceived to the pure kitsch of the period. Guaranteed to delight and inspire. Increasingly scarce.
