Ozenfant, Foundations of Modern Art, New York, Brewer, Warren & Putnam, Inc., 1931, first English edition, 4to (10" x 7.25"), HB, green cloth boards w/ black decorative titles, VG / none. Light edgewear, spine quite faded, interior clean & tight.

Ozenfant, Amédée, 1886–1966, a French art theorist and painter criticized the cubists after 1912 for creating a merely decorative art form. He advocated instead simultaneously embracing traditional classicism together with a focus on disciplined geometry embodied in the newly burgeoning post-war mass-production technology, new materials, and the machine aesthetic.
Together they founded "L'Esprit Nouveau" in 1919, a journal in which their shared ideas on Purist doctrines were articulated. Their association, and the consequently journal, ended badly in 1925 after only 28 issues.
Much of the content of this title draws from articles and ideas from "L'Esprit Nouveau".
Contents:
Part I, The Balance Sheet: Writing, Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, Music, Science, Religion [and] Philosophy and Part II, Structures for a New Spirit.
An early volume on the subject of modernism, remarkably quirky in voice and its accompanying choice of illustrations. [Book ID # 1639]
