Several essays, richly illustrated throughout with examples from the 17thC to the present of maps, decorative arts and everyday objects, urban design and architecture, painting and woodblock prints. Catalog produced to accompany exhibition at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis that subsequently traveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York City and the San Francisco Museum of Modern. Inspired during a grant study trip to Japan in the early 1980's, the exhibition was co-curated by Martin and Mildred (Mickey) Friedmana (husband-and-wife team, respectively, the director and design curator of the Walker Art Center). The exhibition and the book celebrate the continuity of Japanese art and architecture from the Edo period (1603-1868) to the present, putting forth an in-depth examination of the intimate relationship between art and everyday life in Japanese culture.

Essays by leading Japanese and American scholars of Japanese history, art and architecture: James R. Brandon, Ian Buruma, Rand Castile, William H. Coaldrake, Liza Dalby, Chris Fawcett, Kenneth Frampton, Martin Friedman, Yuichiro Kojiro, Donald Richie, Johei Sasaki, Henry D. Smith II, and Marc Treib. Commentaries by Richard Danziger, Mark Holborn, Amy Reigle Newland, Gail Y. Okawa, and Emily Sano. Work by architects and designers such as Tadao Ando, Arata Isozaki, Toyo Ito, Fumihiko Maki, Hiroshi Hara, Kiyoshi Awazu, Shigeo Fukuda, Eiko Ishioka, Shiro Kuramata, Kohei Sugiura, and Tadanori Yokoo.
