Verner Panton (1926 – 1998), a contemporary of and collaborator with Herman Miller, was a prolific, witty and super-mod designer of myriad chairs as well as such objects as the "Fun" lamps, constructed of hundreds upon hundreds of translucent shell discs in chandelier-type shapes, the spherical house and the plastic house pyramid, and pneumatic cushion furniture. As written by Kaiser, the inside front wrap reads:
"Information on one VERNER PANTON, who to everyone's astonishment will be 60 on February 13, 1986, includes the following:
"...he is a committed, complicated, confused, convex, concave, constructive and otherwise only slightly concrete person
"...he was born on the gentle isle of Funen in mid-Denmark, where angels sing polyphonically while pixies tug the tails of trolls
"...he otherwise has both feet firmly planted in outer space, wehre he supplies tables and chairs to furnish the moon base Alpha
"...he would have just loved to play jazz clarinet, but he's almost as content to beat time with his foot
"...he has an ability to create things no one really understands, but 25 years on consider incredibly up-to-date and contemporary
"...when he says that white ought to be forbidden, he means that it should be forbidden for all others to use white whereas that doesn't stop him jolly well producing a large series of lamps for those same people, as WHITE as hell
"...his eyes water when he hears student choirs singing Danish songs in mid-Switzerland and his beer-glass needs an instant refill
"...his creative capability may be hampered by sometimes being unable to find himself or his glasses if Marianne is not close
"...he knows full well that he can be a genius occasionally, but he thinks the rest of us take far too long to spot the fact
"...this is written in deep humility - and in the confident assurance of incurring his out-and-out protest" [Book ID # 1977]
