xii + 227 pp. Thorough monograph on David Adler (1882 - 1949), illustrated with a photographic frontispiece portrait of the architect, followed by 157 numbered b/w plates of interior and exterior views of his stately houses, some accompanied by architectural plans. Photography credits include Ezra Stoller, André Kertész, Laura Gilpin, Hedrich Blessing and others. This posthumously published monograph of commissions completed primarily between 1912 and 1935, is an engaging biographical look at the architect and his work; includes a chronology of works and a list of his personal architectural library. A nice copy despite aforementioned flaws to jacket.

From the dust jacket:

"One of the most original and creative men of his profession, Adler combined a passion for detail with a total sense of the whole; his houses were complete in their harmony. He planned the landscaping, and often did the decoration and furnishing of the interiors to establish a compelling unity and grace.

Most of David Adler’s houses were built in Chicago, and along Chicago’s North Shore, although a few were built for clients in places as far from his home city as Honolulu, Hawaii and Sarasota, Florida.. . . Although built for a different era, most Adler houses are still standing, cherished by their owners, magnificent testimonials to their builder.”
