Early study of modern 20th-century western architecture, the influences of currents at work from movements in Europe such as Bauhaus and the Wiener Werkstatte. Cheney's study was one of the first popular books, in English, to offer a general overview of modern architecture. It featured the work of many modernist architects and did much to popularize the art. "Except for a few pictures introduced for purposes of contrast, " writes Mr. Cheney, "you will find in all the 300 illustrations in this book not a single Greek column or Gothic buttress or Romanesque portal or English-Palladian window."

From the publisher: "In this book Sheldon Cheney has made the first world survey of modern architecture as it has emerged during the last forty years. Mr. Cheney deals only with the architecture which has "grown organically out of machine-age materials and methods of structure, out of modern needs and modern living, out of honest aesthetics, free of stylistic trappings.

In addition to outlining the spread of the "new architecture", Mr. Cheney interprets it. The place of style in the new movement, the problem of home-building and living in the machine-age, the relationship of architecture to business and industry, the possibilities of the future city -- all are discussed by the author, as he explores the new of modernity as observed in 1930.

Among the illustrations, Mr. Cheney presents more than 30 examples of the work of FLW, drawings by Hugh Ferriss, a generous [photographic] representation of the new functionalist architects in Germany, particularly Walter Gropius, and examples of relatively unknown [at the time], but important designs by Americans like Maybeck, Neutra, and Goff......A substantial book offering an American perspective on the work of radical architects in the interwar period up to 1930, embracing European buildings in the international modern style and more eclectic modernist buildings in the USA by such architects as Frank Lloyd Wright, Ely Jacques Kahn, and Howe and Lescaze."

The book is divided into the following sections;

The Past and Its Slaves;
Face to Face with the Machine;
