Itten, Johannes, The Art of Color, Ravensberg, Germany, Otto Meier Verlag (pub.); Reinhold Publishing Corp., New York, NY (US dist.), 1962, 1st edition in English; 2nd printing, sq folio (12" x 12.25"), HB, gray cloth boards w/ dark gray embossed titles in color illus DJ, G+ / G+. Bottom board edges exposed from shelfwear; 2 sm. stains to front board. DJ has chipping, several 1-1.5" tears w/ creasing along edges and a stain from old tape. Very soft stock pp. used have a corner "dog-ear" not effecting any tip-ins.

Subtitled "The subjective experience and objective rationale of color." 155 pp. Profuse color and b/w illustrations, most of which are tipped onto the page - a plate list is included at the rear. Translated from the original German edition, published in 1961, by Ernst van Haagen.

"Color is life, for a world without color seems dead. As a flame produces light, light produces color. As intonation lends color to the spoken word, color lends spiritually realized sound to a form."

An uncommon, early copy of this essential work by the well known color theorist, which despite its flaws, is a far nicer production than the 1973 (and subsequent) reprint(s).     [Book ID # 1899]
