From the flap copy:

After an introduction dealing with order and its purpose in nature, Sir Ernest Gombrich devotes his first chapters to the criticism of ornament, the cult of simplicity and the debate about design in Victorian England. He explores the craftsman's practice of pattern-making as a response to the challenges of material, of geometrical laws, and of psychological restraints, and the discusses the relation between pattern-making and pattern perception. The relationship between psychology and history is the theme of the last four chapters, which deal with the tenacity of ornamental traditions, their modification by changing styles and fashions, the role of symbolism and in the origin and use of motifs, and the psychological roots of the grotesque. An epilogue reviews some of the analogies between the spatial orders of decorative design and the temporal patterns of the dance, or poetry , and of music, including the "kinetic art" of this century.    [Book ID # 1145]
