Demeures et Jardins de France, Paris, Les Publications de France, 1953, first edition, folio (10" x 12.5"), HB, color-printed beige cloth boards w/ black cover pastedown w/ yellow titles, VG- / none. Front hinge starting, a few small spots to front bd & ffep, signatures loose.

Constructions range from the modest cottage to soaring Provencal estates to 15th century castles. Homes are not necessarily decorated commensurate to each building's particular period; this yields such curiosities as a villa at Fontainebleau whose master bedroom is decorated in faux jungle cat prints, in contrast to the chateau Méry, built on the ruins of a St. Denis abbey in 1343 and visited by kings Charles V, VII & X, Henri IV, and Louis XIV, whose hunting room showcases Henri II-era frescoed ceilings. The final section deals exclusively with gardens, mainly very large formal ones with terraces, fountains, mazes, topiaries and such.

Architects and decorators include Jean Royère, Pierre Gon, Paule Marot, Andre Svetchine, Renou et Genisset, Mague Rainal, Jean Prouvé, Jacques Riot, Georges Noel, Henri Champion & Louis Quetelart.

Demeures et Jardins de France is the third in the series Plaisir de France, which began with Maisons de France, a book of 100 country homes.     [Book ID # 1711]
