Bayer, Herbert, Herbert Bayer: Painter, Designer, Architect, New York, Reinhold Publishing Corp., 1967, first edition, 4to (11" x 9"), HB, blue cloth boards w/ gilt spine titles, G+ / none. Ex-library, usual markings.

212 pp, approx. 275 illustrations (24 in color). Includes bibliography. Comprehensive survey of Bayer's collected works.

Herbert Bayer (1900-1985) was an Austrian-born artist who received early training at the Bauhaus by Johannes Itten and Wassily Kandinsky. He was subsequently appointed by Bauhaus director, Walter Gropius to teach a workshop there, "Druck und Reklame" (printing and advertising) from 1925-1928. Bayer emigrated to America in 1938 and the same year, having reconnected with his Bauhaus colleague, Walter Gropius, together they organized the landmark Museum of Modern Art exhibition 'Bauhaus 1919-1928'. Settling at first in NYC, he worked primarily in graphic design and advertising, for the Museum of Modern Art, N. W. Ayer & Sons, J. Walter Thompson, G.E. In 1946, Bayer was hired as a design consultant to the Container Corporation of America, by its progressive CEO Walter Paepke who had been supportive of the re-establishment of the Bauhaus school in Chicago. As such Bayer was encouraged to move to Aspen and, together with Paepke, was a key participant in the early transformation of Aspen from a remote, down-at-the-heels former mining town into The Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies, a center "for thinkers, leaders, artists, and musicians from all over the world to step away from their daily routines and reflect on the underlying values of society and culture" [The Aspen Institute]. He was the architect for its first building and the restoration of the Wheeler Opera House. The inaugural event at the Aspen Institute was a bicentennial celebration of the birth of the German humananist Goethe, who embodied the Institute's mission to become a cultural center dedicated to fostering the synthesis of the arts and the sciences. He was appointed CCA's Chairman of Design from 1956-1965.

From his beginning years at Dessau, during his subsequent residence in Berlin working in advertising, and after his emigration to America, Bayer continuously honed his prodigious range of endeavors painting, drawing, architecture, graphic design, photography, advertising, and exhibition design. The result was a particular artistic vision that aimed constantly to unite the arts and the human experience of an ever-developing technological life. His profound influence on design, though rooted in the Bauhaus lexicon, eventually asserted itself to such a degree on the "look" of American advertising, that today we perceive it as one that is quintessentially American.

In 1971 Bayer was an AIGA medalist for his lifetime of exceptional work and contribution to the field of design.

This title, written and designed by Herbert Bayer, is complete in its coverage of most of his work up to the time of publication. He begins with an introduction, following with an autobiography in which he discusses his upbringing, his training, and his philosophy about art and design. The illustrations are grouped in four parts: visual communication, design for an industry, architecture, and painting, each group arranged more or less chronologically. Each section begins with an essay by Bayer on the topic, all eloquently expressed, and set in his signature lower case letters.
