From the foreword:
"This account naturally seeks to do justice also to the common features which characterise the work and problems of the display artist in whatever country. His job is always poised between business and art, between the direct and practical object of selling and the aspirations of thte artist, two contraries which have to be reconciled and for which he must seek and find an acceptable synthesis.
"Fortunately no generally valid rules can be laid down for the solution of the problems thus posed, and for this reason the present volume cannot pretend or attempt to give any sort of practical instruction. Its purpose is instead to provide a comprehensive account of the field of window display while observing a certain minimum standard of quality. The main aim has been to compile, form the unlimited mass of material, a handbook of suggestions and ideas covering the present position of window display and pointing new lines of advance for the future."
