Moholy-Nagy, Laszlo, The New Vision and Abstract of an Artist, New York, Wittenborn and Company, 1946, third revised edition, small 4to (10" x 7.5"), SB, beige/gray/red wraps, VG- / none. Covers yellowed, endpapers age stained from bindery glue, internally clean.

80 pp. Volume 3 in The Documents of Modern Art Series edited by Robert Motherwell. Preface and Moholy-Nagy's obituary by Walter Gropius. The Bauhaus master expands upon his 1928 treatise "The New Vision" (originally published in Germany as Bauhausbuch 14). He lays out his approach to design education, based upon "the merging of theory and practice", developed and taught at the Bauhaus in Germany and later in Chicago. This edition is supplemented by his additional essay "Abstract of an Artist" and illustrated with his own work. By the time this, the third publication of his original treatise appeared, Moholy-Nagy's theories and those of his Bauhaus colleagues had become common to the vocabulary of modern design. Cover design & typography by Paul Rand. Illustrated w/ many b&w photographs, drawings and diagrams of art, architecture, sculpture, displays, movie sets, furniture, etc.; bibliography; index. The remarkable convergence of several elements key to 20th century modernism itself - MoMA, Gropius, Moholy-Nagy, Rand & Motherwell resulted in the publication of this small but important volume.     [Book ID # 266]
