An energetic and highly informative reference, typical of the author. Alexander Koch, a journalist and the publisher of two art publications in Darmstadt, ("Innendekoration" [Interior Decoration] and "Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration" [German Art and Decoration]), was a prolific spokesman for the the new, more modern style of Jugendstil. In the first issue of his "Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration", Koch appealed for the integration of all the arts and a return to craftsmanship. The movement in Germany, like its counterparts elsewhere in Europe, had undertaken to reform 19th century design and industry. In addition to the magazines, he wrote, edited and published numerous books on architecture, interior design and the decorative arts.

In 1898 the last Grand Duke of Hesse, Ernst Ludwig sought to promote regional industries by establishing Darmstadt as a cultural center for the arts. Together with Koch, Ernst Ludwig established annual competitions for artists and architects, which resulted in the building of several architectural treasures of this period. These and ensuing expositions by the artists' colony at Darmstadt established it, alongside Berlin and Munich, as an important center of the Jugendstil movement.    [Book ID # 371]
