Ward, Lynd, Gods' Man, A Novel in Woodcuts, Ward, Lynd, New York, Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1929, 2nd Edition, sm. 8vo, 8 3/8" x 5 7/8", HB, black cloth spine, b&w illustrated paper boards, illustrated spine label, untrimmed page edges, VG- / none. Boards slightly edgeworn, ex-library (usual markings, but removal was carefully done, thus not too bad), former owner's bookplate on FEP, sm. name and date on flyleaf, spine fraying at head & sm.loss at head - 3/8.
Ward's first wordless book - until this volume, Ward had only illustrated the writing of others. He went on to create a total of five graphic novels. The unpaginated, illustrated novel of 100+ pages of the author's remarkable woodcuts tells the Mephistophelean tale of an artist's rise to success, a bad love affair and...well, you must "see it" to learn how it ends. There are five chapters: "The Brush", "The Mistress", "The Brand", "The Wife", "The Portrait." The wood engraved illustrations are printed on rectos only, versos blank. The scale of these intricate yet powerful illustrations are reproduced in the actual size in which Ward carved his blocks. [Book ID # 645]
