Genauer, Emily, Modern Interiors Today and Tomorrow, Cleveland, OH, World Publishing Co., 1942, first edition, 4to (11.25" x 8.75"), HB, tan cloth boards w/ brown embossed titles, VG- / none. Spine & board edges darkened, owner's sig & address to front pastedown.

Subtitled: A Critical Analysis of Trends in Contemporary Decoration As Seen At the Paris Exposition of Arts and Techniques and Reflected at the New York World's Fair. 255 pp. B/W photos throughout featuring some otherwise difficult-to-find modernist interior design examples. This, now classic reference on modern furniture and interior design, was published on the occasion of the 1939 World's Fair. Genauer, who was the Editor of the Fine and Decorative Arts Sections, The New York World-Telegram, juxtaposes and compares interior designs exhibited at the two international fairs. Many of the photos are from: the Terrace Club at the World's Fair, Bloomingdales, Modernage, the "Town of Tomorrow", Lord & Taylor, Pavilion of the Union des Artistes Modernes, the 1937 Paris Exposition, Paris apartment of Helena Rubenstein. Designers attributed in the book: Alvar Aalto,Jacques Adnet, Dominique, Raymond Raillard, H A Kahn, A Parteneuve, Marcel Goupy, Georg Jensen, and others.

From the introduction:
"The seeds of modernism in home decoration were sown a quarter-century ago ... At the New York World's Fair, 1939, millions of persons coming from all over the globe have the opportunity to observe it in full flower. Being a distinctly contemporary expression, a decor that is simple, direct, comfortable, convenient and honest, fitting excellently the new American architecture and its trend to graceful simplicity, it finds its place very appropriately in the new world of tomorrow being projected (at the fair).
Things...came to a head...in 1937, when the International Exposition of Arts and Techniques opened in Paris. ... It was what happened in Paris which is directly responsible for the present aspect of American modern decoration, and which accounts for the amazing change in scene confronting the public at the New York World's Fair, 1939."
