Bayer, Herbert (edited & designed by), World Geographic Atlas: A Composite if Man's Environment, Chicago, Container Corporation of America, 1953, first edition, elephant folio (15.75" x 11"), HB (no slipcase), tan monkscloth (heavy linen) covered boards w/ all gilt edges, stamped gilt titling, red & black decorative endpapers echoing the pattern of the slipcase, when present, NF / none. Mild foxing to monkscloth, as is often the case; gilt spine titles faded.
368 pp. An interdisciplinary atlas, packed with information, covering the interconnected studies of geography, geology, demography, astronomy, climatology, and economics. The beautiful cartography from the Istituto Geografico de Agostino - Novara, Italy, is printed in from seven to ten colors. These 120 large physical/political maps are combined with 1200 charts, graphs & diagrams, and demonstrate Bayer's revolutionary approach to the expression of quantitative information. Privately printed by Container Corporation of America, for clients only. An atlas previously produced by CCA in 1936 had been "enthusiastically received". As a consequence of the the vast geopolitical changes in the interim, a new one was undertaken in 1949; it was completed after four years of intensive work by Bayer and his studio team and distributed for the CCA's 25th anniversary in 1953. Extensive index. This title, a must in any design library.
