Jolas, Eugene (ed.), Transition, Number 25, Fall, 1936, New York, 1936, first edition, 8vo (8.375" x 6.125"), SB, illustrated stiff white paper wraps; cover design in blue and black by from a lithograph executed for the magazine by Joan Miro, NF/ none. Book is in unread condition with only light wear along fragile yapped edges of the covers.

216 pp., 22 b& w plates + 12 pp. of advertisements.

“transition”, was an international quarterly journal for literary and artistic experiment - drawing contributors from both sides of the Atlantic and most frequently from the modernist energies of Paris between the wars. The journal published 27 issues from 1927 to 1938, featuring works of emerging writers and leading artists from European avant-garde movements: Dada, Surrealism, Expressionism and the Verticalists.

This issue includes sections on literature, photography, cinema, music, and architecture. Some highlights:

Cover by Joan Miró (1893-1983), the Spanish surrealist.

The opening chapter of Franz Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” (its first appearance in English - translated by journal editor Eugene Jolas). The full book was published in German in 1915 and first appeared as complete book in English in 1937. Oddly, the note on Kafka at the beginning of the journal says he died in 1936 at age 30; in fact, he died in 1924 at age 41.

Two works by the 22-year-old Dylan Thomas: Poem and the short story “The Mouse and the Woman”

Two plates by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (Rho-Transparent 50 and Fotogramme).

Works by Piet Mondrian, Cesar Domela, Constantin Brancusi, Paul Klee, and Henri Matisse.

Photographs by M.A Root, Matthew B. Brady, Francis Bruguiere, and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

A study of the Dada movement by Hugo Ball.

An exchange of essays about painting and reality, written by Louis Aragon, Fernand Léger and Le Corbusier.

An unpublished score by Henry Cowell.
