Rudofsky, Bernard, Are Clothes Modern?, Chicago, Paul Theobald, 1947, first edition, 4to (11.25" x 8.75"), HB in unclipped DJ, yellow cloth boards, NF/ VG+. Light shelfwear, sm. .0625" closed tear on top front edge, minor wear at extremities and light rubbing (inevitable on this white dj); some age toning to ffep. Book is clean and tight.

Subtitled " An Essay on Contemporary Apparel.241 pp. Illustrations in b/w, a few color. A discussion of historical, social and ethical issues relating to how humans clothe themselves; "Mr. Rudofsky reminds us that we smugly accept the stupidity of our clothes because we shy away from an insight into the problems of human work, leisure and happiness. The author mercilessly assails the supersitions and conventions by which we are bound, and clarifies the principles which should govern clothing in a modern age."

In 1944 Mr.Rudofsky was Director of Apparel Research at the Museum of Modern Art. In 1945 he curated: 'Are Clothes Modern' and was the author of the exhibition's catalog. He also designed figures used in the galleries, sculpted by Nivola for the MOMA exhibition, that corresponded to silhouettes reflecting various periods of Western fashion. This title is essentially an expansion on the content of the exhibition.

An essential for anyone interested in the history of dressing, fashion trends, body adornment, differing cultural views of the body beautiful and the threads of similarities within fashions of differing cultures throughout the ages. Profusely illustrated with photographs, diagrams, period advertising, drawings and tattoos depicting body ornamentation and dress from numerous cultures past and present -- up to 1947.

One of the nicest copies we've seen of this fascinating title.    [Book ID # 1905]
