Your Hidden Skeleton, Philadelphia, The John C. Winston Company, n.d. [c. 1910], lg 16mo (4" x 6.75"), HB, olive-green cloth boards w/ black decorative titles, b&w illustrated oval paper label mounted inside the decorative ornament, VG / none. Mild wear to extremities, light fingersoiling, previous owner's inscription to ffep, two sm. stains on the upper-left of rear cover.

Unpaginated. Most pages have been used and are dated between July 13 and August 25, 1915. Pages are pre-folded. "A Novel Autograph Book Which Reveals the Secret Skeletons of Your Friends Through Their Handwriting."

"Directions: Sign your name with full pen of ink, on folded line. Use stub pen. Fold paper while ink is still wet. Writing and folding must be done quickly to obtain good results. Be careful to dot the i, and to place the period at the end of the name."

The result is a somewhat symmetrical image from the bleeding of the ink onto the other half of the page, which does look rather like a skeleton of sorts. See also The Ghosts of My Friends on our site. As neither of these books were copyright dated, we don't know when or which publisher originated this amusing idea but undoubtedly one of them seems to have created a very early 20th Century "knock off", by copying the other!    [Book ID # 1957]
