Burges, Johnson, The Lost Art of Profanity, Orson Lowell (drawings by), Indianapolis, Bobbs-Merrill Co., 1948, stated first edition, 8vo (7.75" x 6"), HB, red cloth with gilt titles on front and spine, untrimmed fore edge, VG/G. Light soil, spine head & tail lightly bumped. DJ is rubbed, lightly soiled, edges creased & chipped; 1.5" loss to spine base, triang at top (please see image); rear dj is torn, creased, 2.25 x 1.25" loss to lower left corner (all now expertly repaired).

223 pages, with a foreword by H. L. Mencken. This amusingly illustated book (20 plates of b/w line drawings) looks into the folklore of cursing, citing the origins of many epithets, and even examines mankind's reasonable need to swear! Later chapters are devoted to more contemporary exploration of the subject - specifically "postwar profanity". A humorous addition to any wordsmith's library, with a wonderful jacket design.    [Book ID # 2068]
